Job Title: Geotechnical Department Manager Department: Geosciences
Reports to: Department Director
Job Summary:
The Geotechnical Department Manager position is comprised of administrative, technical, and operational duties with a focus on field operations and oversight of geotechnical equipment. The Department Manager will supervise and manage assigned personnel, will provide technical support for acquisition and processing of survey data, and will provide operational support mobilizing equipment at the office and as needed on the designated vessels. Position will combine hands on and remote support for field operations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily tasks, project involvement, and training of personnel within their line.
- Regularly review and provide personnel performance appraisals within their line, including timely feedback sessions, setting career goals, and mentorship in area of expertise.
- Manage the onboarding process for any new hires within their line.
- Provide feedback on sub-contractor performance to department directors and assist in evaluating potential third-party project personnel.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide support to the Project Managers and Field Project Managers on technical and logistical aspects of mobilization, calibrations, and sea trials. This will include pre-project preparations and planning, mobilization assistance and guidance in the office and in the field, and using expertise to identify and solve issues either foreseen or encountered.
- Carry out review process on technical SOPs and maintain controlled document process.
- Perform in-house training and knowledge sessions with guidance from department directors.
- Coordinates with Geotechnical Director to help oversee geotechnical data acquisition, processing, and reporting.
- Collaborate with geoscience directors and commercial division to provide technical knowledge and survey performance capability for project proposals during the project bidding process.
- Meet with HSEQ team on technical unplanned events and close out any action items.
- Encourage a safe working environment and adherence to the client’s safety procedures.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong working knowledge of marine geotechnical survey equipment and related geophysical equipment including hardware, software, and data sets.
- Effective ability to troubleshoot survey equipment and software.
- Knowledge of survey mobilization and equipment calibration and verifications.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and communication skills.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong supervisory and leadership capability.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in marine related fields of geology, geotechnics, marine science, engineering, or relevant related fields. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of technical experience specifically related to the geotechnical and/or survey industry, 10 years preferred.
- 2 years directly managing personnel, specifically evaluating and documenting employee performance preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Capable of sitting for long periods of time at a computer.
- Physically able to work on deck during marine weather conditions and in warehouse settings.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs., occasionally up to 100 lbs.
